Have prostate issues? Be informed and consider your options for prostate treatment

Prostate cancer is a cancer of the prostate, a gland in the reproductive system. According to the American Urological Association, it is the leading cause of death among cancers for men over the age of 75, and the second leading cause of cancer death among men. Although a cure for prostate cancer is not available on the market, there is various prostate treatment and screening methods for the disease.

PSA, or protein specific antigen, is a protein found in prostate cells. A low level is found in all men. A high level of this antigen denotes an increased risk of prostate cancer. The level of the antigen can be measured from a blood sample, which allows doctors to determine the possibility before symptoms of the disease are experienced.

Prostate treatment , upon discovery of the cancer, can be treated with many techniques. One prostate treatment called brachytherapy, involves either permanent low dose radiation (LDR), or temporary high dose radiation(HDR) within the tissue of the prostate. Invasive prostate surgery is usually the last step to eliminating prostate cancer found in the prostate after other options are considered. It often accompanies the realization by a doctor that the cancer has spread beyond the prostate. Radical Prostatectomy for instance, can be minimally invasive depending on the version and involves incisions made at the belly to remove the prostate gland and surrounding tissues.

Those not experiencing prostate cancer may experience abnormal prostate growth. For moderate prostate enlargement, oral medications are the most common form of treatment. An alpha blocker, such as terazosin takes effect quickly to relieve symptoms. Lazer surgery, microwave therapy and the stent procedure are also available to correct prostate overgrowth.
