subject: Parenting For Christians: Parenting Tips And Christian Parenting Today [print this page]

If you're like most parents, it is your main priority to make sure your children have the best possible life. And if you're like most parents, you've probably spent hours pouring over Christian parenting books just so you can ensure that your children are on the right track. There is nothing wrong with Christian parenting books, but many people forget that parenting for Christians requires supernatural power and guidance from the Lord.

Parenting for Christians is not just about reading the Bible and saying prayers at night. Instead you are required to teach your children things that they will need to know to help them through their lives as they grow into adults. Here are some important things that every parent should teach their children.

Teach confidence. It is common for everyone to experience seasons of insecurity and lack of confidence, but sometimes those momentary bursts of insecurity, if left unchecked, can develop into something more serious such as depression and self loathing. Parenting for Christians requires you to be able to teach your children who God says they are. 1 Peter 2:9 tells us that as Christians we are "...a royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." Of course you don't want your children to become conceited and full of pride, but do teach your children to have a very healthy level of confidence. It is important to remember that we should have a lot of confidence because as Christians, we are children of the King.

Teach trust in God. How much do you trust God? Do you trust Him with your life? Do you really? As Christians, although we know that we are supposed to let God be God and handle our lives, it is extremely temping to allow God to have a portion of our lives, and try to make things happen in our own power. If you've ever tried this, you know that it never works. If you want your kids to learn to trust God, you have to show them that you trust Him. That means you can't live a life of worry. 1 Peter 5:7 reminds us that it is beneficial to cast "....all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." Notice how it said all your anxiety. Not just a portion of it. It takes faith to really trust God, and if you are feeling a little shaky in the faith department, really dive into the Word and build your faith. And don't forget you can always ask God to help your unbelief. It is important to teach your children that in areas where they feel helpless, they can turn to God and receive strength.

Teach sharing. This may seem like an obvious principle, but unbelievably, many people never learned to share when they were younger. This may not seem like a big problem, but with parenting for Christians, it is important to teach your children the importance of sharing. No one wants to be around an adult who refuses to be fair. This will really hinder your children once they enter the business world. It will also cause problems in their marriages because marriages are all about compromise. Instead of indulging your children on their every whim, set up specific situations where they will have to get used to sharing. It may be uncomfortable for them momentarily, but they will appreciate it later in life.
