Vince Vaughn and Kevin James headline an all-star comedy from director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer about a man who finds out that what you don't say to a friend is just as important as what you do. Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum and Queen Latifah join them in The Dilemma, a story of how far you can bend a brotherly bond before it snaps. Since college, confirmed bachelor Ronny (Vaughn) and happily married Nick (James) have been through thick and thin.
Compare a similar line in the film Sex in the City 2. It opens with a wedding between two men, in which a character comments on the events being "a gay wedding."
At that point the line is used disparaginglyuntil it becomes ironic as the camera cuts to buff male dancers, an extravagant spread, and Liza Minelli. The joke is that it really is a very gay weddingbut the underlying message is that a "gay wedding" is different than a "regular wedding." Gay rights activists could have taken issue with this, but none did.
Complaints about the line in The Dilemma stem from the broadening of the term "gay" to mean something awkward or negativecompletely apart from any homosexual meaning. The desire not to offend gays is understandable, though there is much irony inherent in the controversy.
According to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, the word "gay" was first used to describe a homosexual male around 1953. For over 500 yearsdating back to the fourteenth centurythe word meant "happily excited," or "exuberant" or "merry and lively." In fact, that is still the primary dictionary definition today.
The homosexual community adopted the word "gay" as their own about fifty years ago, and created a new definition and meaning. American popular culture, rightly or wrongly, has also adopted new definitions of the wordincluding mildly negative ones that have nothing to do with homosexuality.
