Relieve Your Stress through Diet

Relieve Your Stress through Diet

The modern city life is one characterized by great entertainment, communication, and convenience. It is also unfortunately characterized by stress, a condition which is normal and even beneficial in moderate amounts, but extremely harmful in excess. If you are one of the growing number of people today who feel excessively stressed out, there is a growing field of stress management which is working to help you relieve your stress.

It has been discovered through the study of stress management that there are many techniques to reduce stress, including meditation, massage, and aromatherapy

. There is also the technique of eating; yes eating can be a considerable stress-reliever. Now many people tend to go for the fatty or sugary foods when they are stressed out or aren't feeling well, however this is not the kind of eating which relieves stress, rather there are a collection of foods and particular nutrients which are not only essential to a healthy life, but are also known to relieve stress.

Magnesium is the first stress-reducing nutrient we'll consider. This mineral helps the body produce the neurotransmitter GABA, which in turn helps the body relax and get to sleep. If you're looking for some magnesium-rich foods opt for spinach, broccoli, bananas, oysters, walnuts, avocado, black beans, or yogurt.

Getting sufficient vitamins is crucial for good health, but the most important vitamins for stress relief in particular are vitamins C, E, and the entire vitamin B complex. Getting enough of these vitamins will bring the body's cortisol levels back to normal after being depleted due to stress. You should therefore get some oranges, grapes, blueberries, carrots, green beans, and asparagus, to name a few. Many foods like broccoli and avocado have high levels of these vitamins as well as magnesium, and are therefore especially good for stress.

Some more nutrients which are critical in combating the effects of stress are omega-3 fatty acids. Essential fats like omega-3s are beneficial in many ways, especially for the brain. Go for fatty fish like salmon, tuna, herring, or halibut to get a big dose of omega-3. If fish isn't your thing, go for flaxseeds or some of the various oils which contain high levels of this essential fat such as flaxseed oil, walnut oil, cod liver oil, and extra virgin olive oil.

Now just eating a few of these foods mixed into an otherwise terrible diet will not solve your problems, you need to eat a healthy diet and get as much sleep and exercise as possible to be happy and stress free. Nevertheless, the foods covered here will give you that extra boost you need to feel good and relieve stress and anxiety.
