The Difference Between the Childfree and Childless

People choose not to have kids when they know they can live happily without ever having their own children. They refer to themselves as "voluntarily childless," or preferably, "childfree." Calling oneself childfree sounds a lot nicer than "nonparent," which signifies that person is missing out on something.

Choosing to live childfree can be a tough choice when it's a societal expectation to have at least one child. Childfree people are often mistaken as involuntarily childless - not able to have kids. But there is a clear distinction between involuntary childless people and childfree people. Those who are childless must often learn to cope with not being able to have kids, whereas the childfree are happy that they don't want kids, even though they could have them.

In many cases, neither childfree nor childless couples will admit that they don't want or can't have kids. Pronatalist countries tend to associate guilt, shame, and embarassment with those who don't have kids. It's as if having a baby is the only way to reach true motherhood.

But having a baby is not the only way to reach fulfillment. It may not be at all a way to feel fulfilled. Many parents place so much significance in their kids that they feel insecure when their children grow up and leave the house. Feeling achieved rests within the individual, and not in one or two or even three children. Anyway, if an adult doubts their ability or want for parenthood, they shouldn't have kids. And if a couple wants a child, but can't have one, there is always the ability to heal and possibly choose adoption. Both the decision to adopt and live voluntarily childless can be very responsible, and a person should feel proud if they truly know what they want in life.
