Timber Treatment: Reasons behind the Destruction

Timber refers to the wood, whether in the form of standing trees or felled or turned into boards for construction. The timber industry around the world is very huge, providing wood for a variety of products from paper to particle board. Timber is the wood of trees cut and prepared for use as building material. It is a wood that is used in any of the stages from felling through readiness for use as structural material for construction, or wood pulp for paper production.

People have been referring to timber since at least the seventh century. All measures that are taken to ensure a long life of wood fall under the definition wood preservation (timber treatment). There are number of different (chemical) preservatives, and processes that can extend the life of wood, timber, wood structures or engineered woods. These measures increase the durability and resistance from being destroyed by insects or fungus.

Timber should be treated with a preservative that protects t from being destroyed by insects, fungus or exposure to moisture. The preservatives used to pressure treat timber are classified as pesticides. There are different types of chemicals that are used to treat timber. One of the best chemicals is the sodium silicate as it has the protective properties.

The main reasons behind the destruction of timber are the:

Insects are a great reason behind destruction of wood. Insects like woodworm and others love to make their home in timber. It's a perfect place for home as large timber structures are often inside warm insulated buildings. To treat wood, we can use the measures of dry rot treatment and wood rot treatment.

The other reason behind the wood attack is water. When the water gets into the timber it will cause problem to your timber. When there is decrease in the temperature, the water will freeze. The ice will expand and it will bring the timber breaking away with it.

These all will destroy your wood and will make the structure weak. Timber treatment is necessary to give the long life span to timber.
