Mobility Products And Help For Children

While children are young mobility aids can be used to help them develop a particular skill rather than just for mobility and working on the right muscles to help a child develop can help improve some conditions, other products are available to make living and transportation easier.

Child mobility around the home

An array of mobility equipment is available to adapt your house for the use of a disabled child. Much in the same way as an adult with disabilities getting up and down stairs, beds and showers aswell as manoeuvring around a house all need to be taken into account. Stairlifts can provide an easy solution to stairs if there is no lower level bedroom for a disabled child as once they get to big to carry up the stairs a stairlift can make things safer and easier.

Help buying products

As with older people with disabilities there are charities and grants available to help parents of children with young children to have their houses modified by widening doors and creating better access for a wheel chair. Wheelchairs are supplied by the NHS and if this is a solution then a healthcare professional will arrange for a child to be referred to the wheelchair service.

One a child with mobility problems is 3yrs old they become entitles to the DLA Disability Living Allowance and by using the mobility scheme can offset the cost of necessary modifications to a car or wheelchair but not generally both. Another important channel to use is Whizzkids a charity that has been set up to help children live a more independent life and therefore helps with disability equipment for school and home.

Making Additions & Adaptions

Many of the products available are adaptable for the child to grow and parts can be extended to allow for growth. Many of the modern wheelchairs can be adapted to control electronic equipment using neck controls and other part of the body that send messages through to a central computer, this can allow words to be typed into a computer and then a screen reader can read them allowed, curtains can be opened and closed all from a wheelchair.
