What Is The ADHD and ADD Difference? - Looking At Solutions That Will Help Your Child

What is the ADHD and ADD difference and why are these two terms used almost interchangeably? This causes some confusion but the answer is very simple really.

The term ADD refers only to attention deficit disorder and its main symptoms are those of inattentiveness and the children seem to have a very short attention span.

The ADHD term which stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder means that the hyperactive element is present and that means that the children are constantly on the move and that they also display the ADD symptoms of inattention as well.

The solution to the problem of the ADHD and ADD difference will soon be solved by introducing in the DSM manual, the standard bible for all diagnosis, the acronym AD/HD. This will mean the two types can be easily distinguished by using the relevant part of the acronym. When there is the combined type the complete acronym can be used. When hyperactivity is the main problem, the term HD will be used and AD will be referred to when the children mainly have attention problems.

As regards the treatment of these disorders with standard amphetamine drugs, there is much controversy which shows no signs of abating. The widespread use is causing concern especially now that recent studies actually show that the effects of these medications will actually wear off after three years.

The nation was struck by the recent news that there were as many as 8% of major league basketball players on ADHD medications which are basically amphetamines. These players had to get a special dispensation because those types of drugs which are still Scheduled Class II drugs are not allowed in the sport.

There is a also a risk of substance abuse when these drugs are used to treat children. Not so much from the drugs themselves but from the fact that they may be asked to sell their drugs for recreational use and also for study purposes. Adderall is a hot item right now for college students who want to study all night. It is after all a psychostimulant and will help them to stay focused and alert all night long. It is illegal, the health risks are significant but they do not seem to care at all. In any case, an Adderall tablet can be sold for $15.

Whatever the ADD and ADHD difference, the treatment will be almost always the same and the use of psychostimulants is enormously popular in spite of all the controversy, health warnings and risks of sudden death. All you have to do is visit the FDA site where all the warnings and the risks are there for everyone to see.

The ADD and ADHD difference is really irrelevant when it comes to treatment because the problems of teaching them behavior skills, life skills and coping skills must be at the heart of any treatment program. These are the solutions which will help our children but very few parents and schools are giving this enough attention, unfortunately.

The alternatives to psychostimulants which are made from amphetamines are homeopathic remedies. If you are a little sceptical about these, why not click through to my site where I have explained all this is greater detail.
