Understanding Motorhome Insurance Cover

A motorhome is without a doubt a huge investment and one which not many people can nowadays afford. If you're one of the fortunate ones, in that you own your own motorhome, then you'll no doubt want to make sure it's adequately insured.

But of course, a motor home is not the same as a regular car and as such, there are several things you'll need to take into consideration when shopping for insurance.

Remember, the way in which you intend using the vehicle will have a significant influence on the cost of insuring it. For example, motorhome insurance will cost less if you only intend using the vehicle for a few months each year. This of course is because the less it's being used, the less chance there is of it being involved in a collision and of course the risk of theft is also reduced significantly.

As such, if you only intend using the vehicle during the summer months then you should essentially be looking for a policy which is based on limited mileage. One thing to bear in mind however is that if you happen to exceed the mileage limit, you would not be entitled to make a claim should the need arise.

The next thing you'll need to decide is whether or not you intend travelling outside the UK. In other words, do you intend travelling around Europe or perhaps even further abroad? If you do intend doing so, then European cover is essential. Such cover will entitle you to make a claim while in Europe should your motorhome be involved in an accident or get stolen.

Depending on the level of cover you choose, your insurance company will also pay for any accommodation expenses which arise due to your vehicle being damaged to such an extent that you can't live in it. This is something you need to look into though as many policies will have set limits regarding accommodation expenses.

All insurance companies take the risk of theft extremely seriously. If your motorhome doesn't have any anti-theft devices fitted, you'll definitely be paying far more than you need to for motorhome insurance. Anti-theft devices such as tracking devices, car alarms and immobilisers, all help to keep premiums down. Likewise, if you keep your motorhome locked away under lock and key when you're not using it, you'll also stand to benefit from cheaper insurance.

Many modern motorhomes have all the luxuries of modern day living. These include things such as a flat screen TV, a fridge, a cooker and many other costly items. With this in mind, you should always make sure your insurance policy also covers the contents of your vehicle.

How much an insurance company will pay out if your vehicle is damaged beyond repair is a bit of a grey area, so it's something you need to verify before signing anything. Unfortunately, depending on the type of cover you have, the insurance company may not be willing to pay the full cost of a new vehicle. This is why it's so crucial to study the fine print carefully.

Motorhome insurance deserves some time and effort on your part considering just how much is at stake. Unfortunately however, many people skim through a policy and then sign it, only to find out later that the cover they opted for was insufficient. The bottom line is; shop around, compare quotes and last of all, take your time.
