What Can You Do To Help A Child?

If you saw a child in the street, alone, crying and in obvious distress, would you turn away and ignore that child? Of course you wouldn't. You'd do everything you could to help a child in distress. You'd call the police, try and find the child's parents, or just comfort the child until help arrived. It's the natural thing to do - we care for those who are vulnerable and unable to look after themselves. But every day, around the world, children living in poverty are just as vulnerable, just as desperate for help, and struggling against almost impossible odds just to survive. But in the same way that you would instinctively help a child in front of you, there are ways that you can help these children, too.

Child sponsorship - a practical and easy solution

One of the most effective ways to help children in poverty is to sponsor a child. By simply donating a few dollars a month, you can make a real difference to the life of a child thousands of miles away. Your money helps provide schooling, medical care and real, practical assistance that not only benefits the child but the whole community. It can also help spread the Word of God's love for all His children to parts of the world that may not have heard the message of Jesus Christ. In return, your child will write to you, telling you about his or her life and how your support and kindness makes a difference every single day. And all it will cost you is the equivalent of the price of a restaurant meal once a month, and a little time.

That small amount could change the life of a child forever - and not only that child's life, but the lives of others, too. Many sponsored children go on to complete their education and become doctors or teachers, and then return to their communities to pass on that gift by enriching the lives of others. This is one of the fundamental teachings of Jesus Christ. So by encouraging a child to follow this path, you are perpetuating that message of caring for your fellow man. Your small donation each month could make a real difference for years to come.

You can also donate your time. Local organizations in your own community recognize that poverty is not just an issues in developing countries - it's happening right here in the United States as well. An estimated 15 million American children are living in poverty and face the same hardships and struggle for survival that poor children in some of the most remote parts of the world face. By joining with Christian ministries dedicated to bringing hope and support to poor children in America, you can help a child right here at home, too.

The power of prayer

There's one thing that you can do that doesn't cost you a dime and won't take any time out of your day. It's a simple solution that has profound and lasting effects, and it's something that we all do every day. By simply remembering children in poverty in your prayers, you can make a difference in the life of a child in poverty. Just taking a moment out of your busy day to consider the plight of children in poverty and asking God to provide for their needs can have a profound impact. Why not ask your church to organize a prayer vigil to show support for children in need?
