subject: The Baby Name Process [print this page]

My wife and I recently found out that we are expecting our first child. It is a very exciting time and among all the things that have to be readied before this lovely gift comes into the world, the biggest thing, in my eyes, is coming up with a good name. Apart from our genes and love, this is the most important and public thing we will give this child. He or she will have this for the rest of their lives, it's a little intimidating but it's also a bit fun to work on it and we have to remember that his or her personality will not be dictated by the name we choose!

One of the stipulations (of many) in name choice is that my surname is Spanish and we want a name that will work well; not sound odd or out of place. The other caveat is that my wife is against any name that is widely popular today (she doesn't want our boy or girl in classroom full of ten other kids with the same name) and she doesn't she want a name that is too unique (i.e., something we made up) that will require people to ask two to three times what name is.

First off, we didn't want to name the baby with our given names, they are too popular and I never really liked mine to being with. The second set of names we considered were our parent's grandparent's first and middle names (we didn't want sibling's names to be the first name, maybe a middle name if anything). After much deliberation, we decided that we will use our parent's names as middle names.

We then went down the alphabet and came up with boy name and then girl names and we wrote down the top ten names of each gender we are truly considering. We looked at nicknames we could use for each name (I think this is an important consideration) and how the name will fit with my surname. We have a couple top choices for each gender, but it will probably change before the due date. The next step is to get a baby name book (we have resisted this idea, but it's inevitable) and look through it for some more ideas.

Where can you find the baby name book?

There are a few places that you can head to in order to find the names that you want. You can head to websites online. Trust me, there are a million of them. If you don't want to scour the Internet, and look at a computer screen, I can understand. Also, try your library, and see what they can do for you. Not only do you not have to pay, you can borrow it for a few weeks. This is a great way to take advantage of getting away from buying a book.

As I mentioned, this process is fun and complicated but don't let it get to you!
