Art Deco Inspiration For A Teen Girls Bedroom

When designing a bedroom for your teenage girl, you may want to consider using an art deco inspired design for her room. While you will of course want to make sure that she is on board with the design, this is a great opportunity for her to learn a little about what makes the art deco style unique. Since this is your teens bedroom, you will probably want to let her have a lot of input into the rooms design. If you steer the design in the art deco direction, you can help her create a bedroom with a hint of glamour and a hint of playfulness that will suit her just perfectly.

Classic Touches

As you are thinking about art deco style, there are several components that you want to make sure to include. Art deco was all about opulence and over-the-top glamour, so start with the bed. You will want to add a luxurious, upholstered headboard in shiny fabric that will be a magnificent touch for the room. While the headboard may look extravagant, you can easily fashion one yourself by simply cutting a piece of plywood to the shape that you want, and covering it with some batting. Then add your fabric and simply staple it to the back of the plywood. You can mount the headboard directly to the wall, and you have the effect of an expensive, art deco headboard. When you are designing your headboard, think grand. They are traditionally tall and geometric. Look up some samples online or in a catalog to get an idea of the art deco shapes. Better yet, look up examples with your teen, and let her design the headboard. Then add a shiny surfaced side table on each side of the bed, and you have the beginnings of a fabulous, art deco room.

Classic Furniture Pieces

To add even more drama to your teen girls room, add an armoire to her room. It can have simple lines, and then you can embellish it if you wish. If your teen does not need more closet space, consider a desk armoire that opens to reveal a functioning office space. This way she can contain all of her schoolwork in the armoire, and it is neatly tucked out of sight when she is finished with her work.

Furniture Lines

Probably the most signature look for art deco furniture is waterfall style furniture. These pieces have curved, clean lines that are modern yet organic. Adding a dresser or a vanity would be a great additional art deco accent for the room, but if that is a little too much art deco for your teens taste, you could easily mix contemporary style furniture in as well.

Colors and Shapes

Since art deco is an opulent style, it embraced glitzy glamour. Look for finishing touches for the room that sparkle like bedroom lamps with crystal fringe, or a sleek, shiny silver lamp. Geometric shapes are also part of the art deco aesthetic, so incorporating simple shapes into the decor will support the art deco style. As you are choosing wall colors look for light gray or mocha with just a touch of warm green.
