The Historic Beauty Of Croatia Holidays

Croatia holidays are full of colour and life, a little bit like the regions history.

Dating back to the early seventh century, the Croats arranged the state into two dukedoms. By AD 925 the first King had been crowned which saw Croatias status elevated to Kingdom, and it retained its sovereignty for nearly two centuries.

In 1102 Croatia entered a union with Hungary, and then declared independence from the then Austria-Hungary in 1918, co-founding the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

After the Second World War Croatia became a founding member of the second Yugoslavia, and by June 1991, it again declared independence and became a sovereign state.

The country then suffered a severe period of unrest while borders were fought over and boundaries marked in what was known as the Homeland War.

Thousands of lives were lost and buildings destroyed and it wasnt until 1995 that the Croatia we know and love today started to emerge once again as a beautiful country and popular holiday destination. Croatia holidays will see you visiting the southeast of Europe edging the Adriatic Sea.

Croatia neighbours Hungary and Slovenia to the north, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the southeast and Serbia and Montenegro to the east. It has over 1,100 miles of mainland coastline and over 1,000 islands of which only 47 are inhabited. The historic walled cities of Dubrovnik, Trogir and Split are all UNESCO World Heritage sites and are as beautiful as they are historic. The islands of Hvar, Korcula and Brac create picture perfect holiday settings making sure Croatia holidays are the perfect mixture of cultural history and beautiful scenery.

Croatia holidays enjoy a wonderful warm summer with temperatures often in the high eighties. While winter months along the coast can still see four or five hours of sunshine a day. The local currency is the Kuna which usually has a very favourable exchange rate against the British pound, making Croatia holidays extremely good value for money.
