subject: Baby Boomers Face Challenges Making Career Changes [print this page]

I do believe there is some kind of silver ceiling because changing careers and finding a job later in life is very difficult, especially these days. Even so there are people getting interviews and moving on with a new career.

More retirees are deciding to work full or part time. It may be out of necessity or their choice to work gives them a greater sense of meaning and satisfaction to their lives. Whatever the reason, most people look for a career based on time flexibility and their interests.

One way in which you can prepare for your new career is to make sure what you know is current for your industry or profession.

To do this you first need to make sure you are current on the technologyof your industry. Find out what technologies employers in your industry or profession want to see. Then decide what you need to learn to fill the gap that you do not know about that technology. You may consider adult education class, private tutoring, online classes or college classes.

Be aware that technology terms are often used as keywords to filter the best resumes from electronic databases. If your resume does not have them, no one may ever read anything about you.

If you have started looking for a job in your old industry or for a new career, and no one is even calling you back for an interview, it is probably time to take a good look at your resume.

If you have been adding to the same resume you used 20 years ago it is time to start over. First of all your resume may be using outdated terms. Acquire several publications from the professional associations of your industry and read the articles so that you can discover the terminology.

If you have stopped renewing your membership to the best professional association of your industry because before your company paid for the membership and today you would have to personally lay out the cash for the membership, it may be a very good investment. At the very least you will learn the new language for your industry.

Once that is taken care of make sure your resume reflects the current resume trend . For instance, you no longer need to limit your resume to one page. There is no one you can show all your skills and expertise on one page. Another more current trend is to leave out References Available Upon Request. You do not need to say that because that is assumed.
