A General Overview Of Breast Augmentation Surgery

Women consider breast augmentation for a variety of reasons. Many women may simply be unhappy with the size of her breasts and are considering breast implants. Other women look to breast augmentation for breast reconstruction after having a mastectomy. The reasons range from purely aesthetic to completely medical. Either way, breast augmentation is a known solution to both aesthetic and medical issues regarding the breasts.

Widely known as breast enlargement surgery, breast augmentation uses saline or silicone implants to enlarge the breasts to the size the patient desires. Implants can be placed behind or in front of the pectoral muscle. Your doctor can help you decide which type of breast implant is right for your needs and will determine the best placement to achieve optimal results. Ideal candidates for breast augmentation are in good overall health, are not satisfied with the appearance of their breasts or who have undergone a mastectomy. Certain pre-existing conditions may disqualify you from having breast enlargement surgery, and your doctor will discuss these, and your health history, with you.

Patients will experience some discomfort and swelling following breast augmentation surgery. This is relatively common and will subside as your breasts begin to heal. You should closely monitor for more serious complications, such as infection, displacement or deflation of the implant. Also of concern should be capsular contracture. This occurs when the capsule around the implant tightens and squeezes the implant and hardening it. If you experience any of these complications, call your doctor immediately.

Most patients can resume their regular daily activities and return to work one week after the surgery. However, due to the nature of the surgery and the high impact exercise places on your body, you should refrain from exercise for a minimum of four weeks following your surgery.

After a few weeks, you'll begin to see the results you've always wanted. Your new figure may even boost your self-confidence a bit! If you're ready to take the next step, contact our office to schedule a breast augmentation consultation with one of our skilled plastic surgeons.
