subject: Choosing The College: You Versus Parents: Whose Choice Is This? [print this page]

Everyday we have to make choicesEveryday we have to make choices. Is it easy for you? In fact, we face choices of different importance, some are minor but some are decisive. If you are beating your brains out when choosing what t-shirt to put on today, this is, evidently, a choice of minor importance, the most important consequence of this choice will be what your classmates will think about your style. Does it really matter? However, there are choices that will determine the whole flow of your life. One of such choices is the choice of a college you will study at. It is as clear as a day that occupation plays a great role in the life of every person as your work will provide you financially and it should also give you enjoyment.

To choose a college is difficult in itself but very often the choice becomes even more complicated because of you near and dear people, your parents. Do you feel additional pressure from them? Are they trying to impose their opinion on you? Let us examine the problem and decide what to do about it and how to settle the matter with your parents.

Why are your parents imposing their views on you?

1.They want you to make their unfulfilled dreams and ambitions come true. Certainly, a dream of becoming a doctor that your mother had cherished for so long but could never realize is very noble. Still, you should understand that it necessary to lend an attentive ear to your parents advice but the final decision should be yours.

2.They do not want you to go far from home. In this case, they want you to stay under your mothers wing. This is not right; you are not going to be mamas boy/girl forever are you?

How to persuade the parents that you should make a choice yourself?

1.Show them you have your opinion and your choice. You should present proofs and concrete ideas.

2.Justify your choice. Explain the reasons for your choice.

3.Prove they can trust you. If your parents do not want you to go far from home, show them that you are mature. Do not be aggressive, be persuasive.
