Elders & Kids Drum Together

The drum circle is the first step in launching a Connecting the Generations program at Sunset Hills Montessori School. The program is vision of Steve Gurney, parent of two children at Sunset Hills Montessori School and the founder and publisher of Guide to Retirement Living SourceBook. He states, We are striving to engage the elders who live in senior communities that are in close proximity to Sunset Hills Montessori School to share their wisdom and experience and serve as a resource to the teachers and children.

As part of the program, Music teacher Melissa Christopher Green had asked if there were any elders in the communities that might have experience with African drumming, specifically the Djumba. This presented a great opportunity to bring in Alan Yellowitz, a pioneer in the development of percussion based activities at senior communities and to connect the seniors and children together with a common focus.

Tall Oaks Assisted Living presented a great partner for Sunset Hills Montessori School . Tall Oaks is less than 5 minutes away and is a senior community with a history of embracing intergenerational programming. On April 14 the children will visit Tall Oaks Assisted Living and engage in a drum circle with the residents.

The hope is that this drum circle is just the beginning of long-term relationship between the school and the residents of Tall Oaks Assisted Living and other neighboring communities. The Connecting the Generations program will strive to tap into the wisdom and experience of the elders to serve as a resource to the teachers, faculty and children at Sunset Hills Montessori School .
