However, dfo know what it actually takes in order to be an American Idol? What's involved, who does the deciding and who makes sure those people are up on that stage singing for you once a week while you watch them slowly eliminated from the show? No? Well I didn't know either so I set out to find out the answer to that exact question recently and here's what I learned.
First, there are auditions for the show held all over the United States. They are open to pretty much anyone who cares to try out for the show and thousands try out each year. They will have a brief audition together with several other contestants in front of one or two of the shows producers, who ho hum through the songs they sing and send the vast majority of those people home.
Then, they go through another audition, this time involving several hundred, instead of several thousand contestants and this is done before the four American Idol judges, who cull the list further to a small handful who are sent on to Hollywood (by the way, for those who plan to watch American Idol, there will be three permanent judges and one guest judge who will be switched out periodically since the fourth permanent judge, comedian Ellen Degeneres will not be taking up her position until the season officially begins. The guest judges are going to be Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas and Neil Patrick Harris).
Once contestants pass this round, they go on to Hollywood for the actual show. They perform in front of the judges who eliminate people on different days. Each time, the pool gets smaller and smaller until they make it to the semifinals. In the past few seasons, there have been a total of 36 semifinalists who made it this far. These guys stand a chance of actually making it into the music business even if they don't advance beyond that stage because the publicity for them is already quite extensive (think about this: there are 435 U.S. Congressmen and they get reelected every two years, but they still manage to make waves. With just 36 contestants, these people are definitely the creme de la creme.)
And then of course comes the reason you will watch this season, the finals. There are typically just 12 finalists for the show. These people continue on to sing in front of live audiences who will then decide their fate together with the people of America until at the end of the season, one person will be crowned your new American Idol.
