Benefits Of Online Data Backup

When it comes to data storage solutions, everyone has an opinion on what is the best option to take. Some people think that maintaining their own backups onsite through either CD or data storage solutions is the right path to follow, while others think that there is no need to perform any backup at all. The latest possibility to hit the market is to perform an online data backup to one of the web servers that exists around the globe. There are a number of benefits to utilising this new service and we will look at a couple of them below.

The first benefit that you have is cost. Providing your own backup storage solution on site is extremely costly. Whether you want to utilise backup tapes or CD's it will end up costing you more than performing an online backup. You will have the initial outlay for media and the backup drive itself. Then on top of that you will have the additional cost of purchasing additional backup media. When you pay for online data backup space, you will pay a yearly fee for storage space and that is it. Obviously the more data that you need to backup the more costly online data backups will become, but really there is no need to backup operating system components.

Another benefit to utilising online data backup is that the files are available securely from anywhere around the world. All that is required is the use of a username and password and the address for the FTP server. If you have a backup that is stored on a CD or backup tape, then firstly you will need to find a machine that has a system in place that will take the media that you have. Once you have achieved that you will need to obtain the software so that you can pull the software off of the media. In all fairness you would be very lucky to find a machine that has the correct hardware and software to retrieve the files off of the media.

The last benefit the online version has over the standard version is that if there is a fire in your building or office then you can be working within minutes. Simply log on to the server from any machine and download your important files and get working. No need to wait for an insurance claim.

If you are looking to update your backup solution in 2010, then why don't you look at moving to online data backups.
