subject: Weight Loss With Green Tea-fact Or Fiction? [print this page]

Fire up your burner and put on your tea kettle. Green tea may be beneficial to your health but does it induce weight loss? Several studies with laboratory mice have scientists concluding this may be true. Not only is weight loss a possibility, but also an array of serious medical conditions could benefit from drinking green tea. Of course research studies with human trials have yet to begin, but are definitely foreseeable in the near future.

The Chinese culture has been using green tea to cure the majority of their ailments for more than 4000 years. Asia has always sought the ancient remedies for healing and only opting for medical prescriptions as last resort. Are Asians healthier in respect to Americans? Yes, but now since our culture has overflowed to the east, the obesity and heart disease is on a fast incline. The Americans indulgence with fatty food is taking over the once healthy traditions.

The green tea has shown promise for lowering cholesterol, decreasing the risk of certain cancers, atherosclerosis and fatty liver disease. With the rise of obesity in the United States, also comes the rise of fatty liver disease. The excess fat cannot be metabolized so it is stored in the liver. This can eventually lead to liver failure since the liver has to work so much harder to function properly.

Green tea is very high in catechins, which is a kind of polyphenol, reported to be a strong antioxidant. For years, numerous studies have been done with antioxidants, but how does this relate to weight loss? Well, right now it is just a hypothesis that the catechins helps with the increase of metabolism. Other conclusions have been drawn in which researchers believe weight loss enhanced by the combination of the green tea and caffeine. Grants have been obtained by some universities to further study this potential miracle cure, but consumers will probably not know the results of human trials for years to come. After all, this is not one of the new sensational prescription drugs with the dangerous side effects the pharmaceutical companies have developed.

The benefits of green tea could be numerous when more studies are completed. The only side effect reported to date is trouble sleeping because of the stimulant effect. Which so much to gain and nothing to lose, why not brew a cup today? You may gain some improved health advantages similar to the eastern culture.
