subject: Keeping Safe As A Female Driver [print this page]

Although being in a car is probably the safest form of personal transport there is for a woman there are still some precautions you should take to make sure you stay that way. Women drivers should always remember to lock their car doors once they get into their car - and not just the drivers' door only. A lone woman driver in a car with unlocked doors while stationary on a street and stopping for a red light may be an open opportunity for some attacker.

Another safety driving tip for women drivers is to place their hand bags on the floor out of sight. It's too easy just to sling your handbag on the passenger seat while you buckle up and drive off but this is the perfect opportunity for a thief to open the door and grab it.

Even if the door is locked, some thieves are so determined or desperate to have the bag that they will even smash the window with some hard object like an iron bar and quickly steal the bag. It could happen since you could already have been shocked by the crashed window and already fearing for your safety.

It goes without saying that as a women on her own in a car, you should never, ever pick up hitchhikers or stop to help an accident/incident in a dark isolated place. If you have a mobile phone, keep it charged and with you at all times while driving so if you see a situation that may need attention you can call the police first without putting yourself in danger.

So next time you are out driving, lock all your doors and remember to place your handbag and other valuables on the car floor or in the glove compartent. Also, keep your mobile phone with you in case of emergencies and you will have taken as many steps as you can to staying safe.
