The Characteristics of Effective Firefighters: Competence

Firefighting takes a certain type of person to thrive on the job. That's why they're referred to as, "the bravest." But there's more to it. You can run into a burning building and save someone and be a hero. But career firefighters have a firm grounding in proven firefighting techniques.

Firefighting is a science

Having the knowledge of how materials behave under the stress of high temperatures can save a life; yours or someone else's. You'll need to have knowledge of construction. Understanding how structures change and behave during a fire can make the difference between success and failure in a life or death situation.

Competence in firefighter protocol and procedure can lead to a long and distinguished career of strong ties to colleagues that can become friendships with long lasting bonds. While the stakes are high, most firefighters enjoy their careers and walk away from the job with a sense of pride, and many great stories to tell.

Your own safety

Focus is an important part of on-the-job-competence. Achieving a high degree of concentration and focus while fighting a fire will keep you safe. Any experienced firefighter will tell you to trust your instincts, and use your movements economically. In other words, conserve your energy and be decisive. When in doubt rely on what you've learned. Good training and goes a long way in fighting fires.

Preservation of the Team

Firefighters have different responsibilities and roles while fighting a fire. A competent firefighter knows what those roles are and how they work together. Everyone's safety depends on it. Establishing yourself as a team player will help build the bonds of trust between you and your fellow firefighters. Trust is of the utmost importance since you'll depend on the other firefighters just as they'll depend on you.

Those are the main elements needed for proven competence in firefighting: Understanding the scientific components, compliance with procedure and protocol, being focused, and taking actions to preserve the unity of the team.

Not all situations can be anticipated but the better trained you are the greater your chances are for safety and the safety of those who depend on you.
