Keelguard And Dock Devices Help Protect Boat Exteriors

The keel is probably one of the most damaged parts of the boat as it is the front and most projected area. The keel can easily be protected from damage caused by rocks or sandy shorelines with a product called Keelguard. Keelguard helps shield the keel from abrasion, corrosion, and scratches by creating a flexible barrier. When damage occurs to the keel its protective coating can be scratched which can later lead to water damage in the boats fiberglass laminate. Using a strong 3M adhesive, Keelguard is easy to install and will help extend the life of the exterior of any watercraft.

Many of the other protective products for boats are used when mooring a boat or storing it next to a dock. Even the most experienced boat drivers occasionally experience a mishap due to wind or waves and will want to protect the edge of the dock as well as the sides of the boat when coming into dock.

One of these protective dock products are Dock Corner Wheels. These adjustable wheels attach easily to the corner of a dock and will help roll and divert a boat to the side of the dock incase of a windy approach that brings the boat to an odd angle. The wheels can be adjusted to different firmness and also add a finished look to the dock.

Another dock protector is the Hull Hugr. The Hull Hugr is a flexible vinyl device that hangs along the hull of the boat and creates a cushion between the dock and the hull. Unlike some devices that are spaced along the side this device protects every inch of the hull. It is also low-profile and folds up for easy storage on the boat.

Similar to the Hull Hugr, dock fenders can be attached to the side of a watercraft to create a barrier between the boat's exterior and the rough edge of the dock. Dock fenders are attached to the boat with vinyl rope and are usually spaced a few feet apart. Once in place, dock fenders do help keep the boat from rubbing against the dock even when it gets pushed around by waves and wind. Although unless watched properly when docking, dock fenders can roll around somewhat and allow the boat to bump into the dock.

If a Hull Hugr or a few dock fenders are not enough to protect a boat from scratches or dents, docks can also be edged with a flexible PVC resin known as dock edging. Although dock edging does not provide as much recoil as other devices it will cover sharp edges and keep the exterior coating of a boat protected from minor bumps or run-ins. Another advantage of dock edging is that it makes a dock look well finished and professional.

Boats can be a large expense but can also provide hours of relaxation. If boat owners want to extend the life of their boat and keep it looking top of the line they should consider protecting the exterior with Keelguard or avoid dents and dings with protective devices for the dock.
