Fifteen Minutes of Fame

The fifteen minutes of fame idea has long since become obsolete. Youtube stardom is a reality, people. You can no longer avoid how important social media marketing and going viral is to the marketing world. Characters like Tay Zonday(of chocolate rain fame), or Tron Guy(of ill-fitting homemade tron suit fame) have had many appearances on various late-night talk shows, alternative news programs, and even the hit adult animated series SouthPark. Even more so they are referenced a lot throughout the media. And last but not least, people talk about them. A lot. Everywhere. Millions of people. Now, how can you, as someone promoting a specific brand or company, leverage that?

Well it takes a considerable amount of research and understanding of web trends. It takes a youthful spirit, as the youth drive fashion. It takes motivation and determination. You may think it sounds easy, spending time on facebook and twitter and the like, reading up on what's "in", but it's not. Others may do this for fun, but when you do it, you aren't just reading, you are digesting. You need to devour the information and track it. You can't just go with intuition alone, you need cold hard data, which means researchresearchresearch. You have to test it on various secure channels before you turn it live. If it becomes known that you are "trying" to go viral, then you will get shut down faster than a kid's laptop when he hears his mom walking in on him browsing porn.

Now with any new field there is major danger to it. A lot of viral stars are objects of ridicule. Such is the nature of what tends to go viral. But to point to a success story- or stories- you may notice that a lot of movies are hinted at long before they are announced through the use of viral advertising. Before Batman: The Dark Knight was announced, there was an entire website plastered with cryptic links and riddles that hinted at what it was and who was in the movie. It quickly became well known on the internet and it is undeniable that the advertisement campaigns on the net played a role in the massively successful turnout of the movie- as well as the previous movie being awesome, and the trailers for the new one being incredibly well made. Also the hype of Heath Ledgers death. But still, a success story nonetheless. You can make it in viral marketing. But you have to try. You have to know how to leverage those key social media influencers.
