Due to the nature of their work, they are intelligent and have great general and special knowledge. This is because they have to do a lot of research on different matters that are attached to certain cases.
Some attorneys like to deal with only certain aspects of the law. There are up to seventy kinds of law that attorneys can involve themselves with. Providing a lawyer has a license he or she either can defend a defendant or can represent a plaintiff in a court of law. There are also lawyers who enjoy the investigative and research nature of the business.
Almost one third of attorneys work as partners for law firms, or work for themselves. The balance of attorneys are employees in law practices or in large conglomerates.
To get into law school is no easy feat. The competition to be admitted to law school is intense and so is finding a vacancy in a law firm. To become a lawyer, the minimum requirement is a 4-year college degree and 3 years of law school. After that you will be required to pass a written bar exam. Requirements could vary by state and to specialize, there may be additional requirements.
Most private practice attorneys work with criminal or civil law. Criminal law pertains to crime and the alleged criminal would need legal representation. Civil law deals with more mundane issues such as deeds, wills, trust and other kinds of such matters.
Some attorneys work only on public-interest cases, focusing on certain causes to reshape the way the law is applied.
Some attorneys prefer to work for one client only. These lawyers are known as house council attorneys. They would represent the client in matters such as: property, government regulations, patents, etc.
Government also employs attorneys at various levels. These attorneys include attorneys general, public defenders and prosecutors. Federal attorneys investigate a variety of cases for the Department of Justice as well as other agencies.
There is a huge amount of responsibility placed on attorneys. Would be lawyers want to make sure that this is the right kind of occupation for them. They will need to like working with people and should excel at communication.
