Early Brushing Routines Will Follow Your Child Through Adulthood

Encouraging a good dental routine in your child early will prevent cavities and tooth decay throughout a lifetime. It generally will take about a week to get your child used to the routine. It will take about 15 minutes a day to practice your child's new routine. Soon your child will be used to the routine and it will be a pro. They will be brushing on their own and without being told in no time. Below are three tips on how you can teach your kids to care for their teeth from a very early age.

1. Morning Brushes: Each morning, go to the bathroom and show your child how to put the toothpaste on the brush and the proper methods brush their teeth. It is best to spend about two to three minutes brushing their teeth. Brushing should be one of the first things your child does before doing anything fun.

2. Flossing: Flossing teeth is proven to be just as, if not more, effective than brushing teeth. The important part is doing both. Kids should floss at least twice a day after meals to really get in between every tooth. Make flossing fun for your children by making a game out of it. See who can get in between every tooth the fastest, but make sure they do a thorough job.

3. Nighttime brushing is just as important as brushing in the morning. When establishing your nighttime routine join your child in the bathroom and show them how to brush and floss to end the day. After your child brushes for the evening treat them with a bedtime story.

The earlier they get in the habit, the more persistent they will be. Healthy teeth means easier dentist visits and a great start to have healthy teeth through adulthood.
