How To Put On A Puppet Show

Author: Inger Fountain

Playing with puppets is a wonderful way for kids to express themselves creatively and build confidence when around other people. Even the shyest kid will be encouraged to perform with puppets, as the attention is on the character of the puppet, not the child.

Taking puppet play one step further and putting on a performance needn't be a big deal. All that's needed is puppets, performers, a theater and a play to perform. Items for the performance can be found around the home or purchased inexpensively.

Puppets can be bought for very reasonable prices or be home made. If making puppets at home, allow children to help as it will enhance their understanding of the magic of puppets. Puppets can be made with paper bags, socks, toilet rolls and a whole range of other household items.

Kids can create their own stories or choose to re-enact a familiar story, depending on the range of puppets they have available. Simple stories can come from Nursery Rhymes or Parables. These are short, clear and are often familiar to a number of children.

Stories like The Three Little Pigs, Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Tortoise and the Hare have been ingrained into the minds of children and adults for decades. They have few characters, which is great for a first time performance and they have a definite beginning, middle and ending. Not only that these stories have opportunities for action and funny voices, two assets of wonderful puppet theater.

The theater or stage needn't be a big deal. Kids can perform behind boxes, tables covered with cloth or in doorways. Covering up the performers really adds to the mystery of a performance, especially for young audience members. If you don't have a theater set-up, a simple sheet can go a long way.

Puppet performances teach kids about working as a team, reading and expressing written words and performing. With a little thought they can be wonderful events to be enjoyed by both audience and performer.
