subject: Ways To Know If You Are In Need Of A Bed Bugs Treatment [print this page]

Bed bugs are small, parasitic insects that live on the blood of humans and animals. They set up camp close to sleeping areas where they are best able to both breed and feed. There are numerous ways to come in contact with bed bugs, and identifying them once they get into a home can be somewhat difficult. Making a successful diagnosis of the problem however, is the first and most crucial step in getting an effective bed bugs treatment.

One of the most common ways to get bugs in your home is to have them hitch a ride on your return from travels. These tiny insects like to hide in clothing and in luggage. There are prone to crawling into hard to see spaces and are likely to be found in side pockets and compartments, which can make them initially difficult to spot.

Another common way to bring bed bugs into your home is through the purchase of used furniture that has come from an already infested house. Though they may not have been visible when you made your purchase they can easily hide within the foam or seams of a used mattress, futon, sofa or other furniture. Once the second-hand item is brought home, the bed bugs can spread throughout the house.

These insects are most active at night. They feed and breed in the wee hours of the morning, which means waking up with red, itchy bite marks after or while traveling, or following the purchase of used furniture is a good sign that you need to do some investigating. Determining that what you are dealing with is bed bugs for certain is the first step in a successful treatment.

The bugs that you are looking for are small, flat and circular in shape. The adults have a red brown color, while the nymphs or children are much lighter. Both have a tendency to turn darker after having fed, so either might appear as blood red. Both are also likely to be found on or near the household sleeping areas.

Pull the sheets and other bed clothes away from the mattress. You may not spy bed bugs immediately, but if they are present they typically leave brown to dark brown spots on the surface of the mattress. This is their fecal matter, left behind after each meal.

If there is no sign of insect feces or the actual bed bugs themselves try looking along the ridged stitching that runs along the exterior of the mattress. This is a common spot for hiding. Bed bugs will also hide in any furniture that is bedside including night stands, dressers, the head board and in any pictures and frames that may be by or above the bed.

Bed bugs are common in unsanitary, cluttered areas. This doesn't mean however, that having them is a testament to poor cleaning skills. Bed bugs infest houses that are both dirty and clean. Remember, they hitchhike their way into your home as the classic stowaway. They do enjoy clutter however, because there are plenty of places to hide, which can make treatment difficult if not impossible.

Getting rid of bed bugs is often said to be no easy task. While in many ways this is true, online research can provide a host of viable bed bugs treatments. Identifying the problem, discerning the cause, and finding the right method for getting rid of your infestation will eliminate the potential of having the problem spread to the homes of family and friends.
