subject: Protecting Your Most Valuable Asset With Adequate Building Insurance [print this page]

Let's face it your home is more than likely the most expensive thing you own. Not only does it cost a vast amount of money to buy in the first place, but most home owners continue spending money on their homes throughout their lives. If you're not painting it, you're having an extension done, or perhaps a garage or loft conversion is being added.

I don't know about you, but I certainly wouldn't be able to sleep at night if my home wasn't insured. After all, if I didn't have insurance, I'd be in a right mess if my home ever ended up being destroyed, because there's absolutely no way I would ever be able to afford rebuilding it.

Sure, I know there's not much chance of my home being destroyed, or at least that's what I like to believe, but the truth is you can never really be sure. All it takes is something like an electrical fault and within minutes the average home can be reduced to a pile of charred debris. Flooding is yet another reason for concern and it's not as if the UK doesn't get its fair share of floods, particularly in more recent times.

While a fire may not destroy your home entirely and while a flood may only cause a limited amount of damage, the chances are it's going to cost thousands of pounds to carry out all the necessary repairs. Also such repairs could take weeks or ever months, during which time your home may not be habitable. In that case you would need to find alternative accommodation and here again, this costs money. Fortunately for those who have building insurance, these are all things which will be taken care of by their insurance providers should disaster ever strike.

Next time you speak to someone who doesn't have their home insured you should ask them why. You can be rest assured they'll say it's because they cannot afford insurance and yet it's possible to insure a home for next to nothing in the UK nowadays. Providing you're willing to make a few changes, you'll be amazed at just how cheap you can get insurance for.

For example, theft and vandalism plays a huge part in terms of affordable building insurance. As a result, the more difficult you make things for thieves, the lower your premiums will be. This means you'll need to get an alarm system fitted and you should ideally have bars on all the windows. If you can afford to have CCTV installed, insurance companies will usually offer you an additional discount.

Protecting your home against fire is also a must. Get out there and get a fire alarm and a few smoke detectors and then either install them yourself of get someone in to do it for you. You may also want to consider having a sprinkler system installed, as this will also help to reduce your premiums even further.

These are just a few things you can do in order to keep the cost of home building insurance down, but if you're willing to do a little bit more research, you'll soon discover other things as well. One of the most important things, is that your really do need to shop around in order to get quotes from a number of different providers. Yes, research does take time but in the long run it will be worth it.
