Build or Buy: Custom Gaming PCs

Author: Shane

How do you find the perfect gaming PC? You can either build your own, buy one from a major PC retailer like Dell or HP, or you can go with a custom gaming PC company that will help you customize your own PC. The third option means looking at companies like iBUYPOWER, Cyberpower, and Digitalstorm. Alienware is another choice, but they tend to be pricier and not necessarily as good when it comes to customizability. Of course, the first step to deciding what choice to make is determining your gaming needs. Do you need a state of the art, high-end PC for hardcore gaming? Or are you more moderate in your gaming needs? Do you play online games? If so, even the greatest graphics card in the world won't do myou much good without a decent internet connection. In fact, there are special NIC cards built for getting teh best performance out of online gaming. This is definitely important for FPS online games and even some MMOs where lag plays a critical factor in determining whether or not you succeed in an enconter. If you game online a lot, it may be worth it to invest in a great network chip and cut back a bit on the graphics card. Storage is of course another important consideration. If you own a lot of newer games or want to store movies and music on your PC, consider getting a large (500gb+) hard drive or two smaller hard drives. You can also purchase a solid state drive as your primary drive for system tasks and some games that you might want to load faster. Solid state drives are smaller but more energy efficient, and often allow for faster loading overall, which is important for graphically-intense games. It ultimately comes down to how important it is to have a tweaked, extremely customized system. If you care less about having every part customized or just don't want the hassle of trying to figure out what's compatible - and then have to build it on your own - it makes sense to go with a gaming PC manufacterer.
