subject: New Student Or Returning Careerist, Online Degrees A Welcome Change [print this page]

Making the decision to return to college for the university degrees you need is not one to be taken lightly. In order to earn a degree, you must be willing to make a commitment of your time, as well as spend a fair amount of money, to make it happen. Today's weak economy means more people are on an extremely tight budget, and the investment involved in pursuing an education could mean an even tighter one.

There is also the issue of keeping your responsibilities in line. As a working adult, you may have the responsibility of being the sole breadwinner in your family. You may have small children to take care of. You may have all of these things, and hobbies to pursue as well. When you are enrolled in a traditional on-campus program, you are tied to reporting to class and long commute times.

Online colleges understand how this works, and always create online masters program with these things in mind. You can work from home, on your own time, without having to compromise the quality of education you receive. You can keep your schedule as is, and work on classes when it is most convenient for you.

Another advantage to this form of education is to be able to break apart lessons into easier to grasp portions. You can take your time on some of the more complicated information, and complete the easier parts more rapidly. If you have not been in a learning environment in awhile, this could be even more beneficial to you.

If you've never taken a course online, you can become more familiar with this style of learning by first enrolling in a free online class. Many colleges offer this as an introduction to online learning, so students can get to know the way it works before enrolling in a full online degree program. You can ease your way back into an education more fluidly this way.

An online learning environment also keeps you focused on your studies, and keeps you from being distracted or feeling self-conscious. Many adults hesitate to return to school, as they're afraid of being significantly older than their fellow students. This is not an issue in an online environment and you can concentrate on the tasks placed before you without worrying about other students.

Learning from fellow students with similar goals is also an advantage to an associate degree online. You can network with other working professionals who may have insight into job searches or resume writing techniques. Meet with other students in a virtual student union, or email one-on-one.
