Should You Be Worried About Your Online Privacy?

Privacy is a big issue for many people. Being able to live life and not be bothered is a value that many attempt to have. With the internet, it is easy to have privacy compromised since almost everything that you do can easily be recorded. Is there any reason to be concerned about your privacy online?

First of all, the online world is the "real" world regardless of what is said. If you give out your name, address, phone number, and other personal information online, it is just as real as telling someone face to face. The potential dangers of doing this regardless of the platform are equally real. Whatever you say about yourself online, could technically come back to you in real life since its all part of the same world. If you don't want someone to know something about you, don't post that information online regardless of how private you feel the information is or not.

Another concern that some people have are cookies and search results. There are some radio advertisements that talk about using services to keep your information private and safe. There really is no reason to fear cookies. This is just a small text file that logs that you have been to the site. Some sites show up differently the first time you come to them than when you are a returning visitor. The cookie tells the server you have been there before so you get the repeat visitor experience that the site is designed for.

As far as search results, most search engines save the data that you type into the searches. The reason for this is to release these numbers to advertisers to show how much search traffic there is for specific terms. Your IP address and personal information are not attached to this information.

The best advice is to use common sense. Keep your private stories private while expecting the information that you do share openly to be shared.
