There really is no reason to fear cookies. This is just a small text file that logs that you have been to the site. Some sites show up differently the first time you come to them than when you are a returning visitor. The cookie tells the server you have been there before so you get the repeat visitor experience that the site is designed for.
As far as search results, most search engines save the data that you type into the searches. The reason for this is to release these numbers to advertisers to show how much search traffic there is for specific terms. Your IP address and personal information are not attached to this information.
The best advice is to use common sense. Keep your private stories private while expecting the information that you do share openly to be shared.
