subject: The Art And Science Of Attachment Parenting [print this page]

How do you define attachment parenting? Also called AP, it has been a favorite subject among family counselors, parent experts, and even mothers and fathers who want to know what it means.

So far, there are a lot of definitions about attachment parenting, and these are the ones that have stood out:

Attachment parenting happens when the baby is still in the womb.

There is a misconception that attachment parenting happens only when the child is born. However, the truth is that it begins even before he or she goes out of the womb. In fact, it includes the entire pregnancy and birthing process. Casual talking and stroking of the belly is one of the common signs of attachment parenting.

Practicing AP even before the child is born is essential because it gives you a long time to prepare. You can decide together with your partner on how you want to give birth and raise the child. In the process, you prepare not only your baby for his or her entry into the world, but you are also readied of the potential tasks you have to do.

Attachment parenting is all about the bond created.

AP aims to explain the connection between the physical and emotional bond parents have with their kids and their childrens behavior and traits when they grow old. It states that if the parent and child werent able to create a good relationship while the latter is still young, then it would be more difficult to build a relationship once the child has already grown.

Attachment parenting gives more emphasis on care.

AP encourages parents to practice gentle parenting. It means that the parent should demonstrate tender, loving care to the child through various ways, such as wearing the baby through the sling, being sensitive to his or her needs, and feeding the baby whenever its time to do so.
