Overview Of Isola Delba - Basic Informations

Isola dElba is the third largest island in Italy, with Sicily and Sardinia bigger than this island. However, in the Tuscan Archipelago, which lies between the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea, it is the largest island. Isola dElba is situated in the province of Tuscany, lying at a distance of about 20 km from Piombino, the coastal town in Tuscany. The Island of Corsica, a French province is about 50 km from Isola dElba. The National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago includes Isola dElba and the other islands in this archipelago.

The Isola dElba Island had been divided into 8 municipalities, the main municipality being Portoferraio. The other 7 municipalities of Capoliveri, Marciana Marina, Marciana, Campo nellElba, Rio Marina, Porto Azzurro, and Rio nellElba belong to the province of Livorno. The population of Isola dElba is around 30,000 but this would increase considerably when tourists arrive in large numbers to this island in summer.

The beautiful beaches of Isola dElba, the picturesque villages in the island, and the interior mountainous area attract several thousands of tourists during summer. In the other months, the island is a laid-back and quite place, with only the residents leading their leisurely life. The best tour program of this gorgeous island is to follow the old walking trail that links the south coast villages of Isola dElba to its north coast villages. You would come across small, idyllic villages, isolated beaches, the enchanting wilderness of the mountains, and panoramic sceneries of the Mediterranean sea, that you would never forget during your lifetime.

There are quite a few rivers in Isola dElba but they are not lengthy, due to the size of the island. The longest river is Fosso San Francesco, with a length of about 6.5 km, followed by Fosso Barion of 5.1 km and Fosso Redinoce of 2 km. Most of the rivers are lesser than 3 km in length. Many of them dry up completely in the summer season. A natural spring named Fonte Napoleone, situated at the foot of the Mount Capanne between Marciana and Poggio is a huge attraction for the pure spring water produced by it.
