Buying A Car - Now I Need To Find Insurance

As in several other countries, car insurance in the UK is not optional. In fact, driving any uninsured vehicle on public roads is considered to be quite a serious offence, and if you were to be unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, and you had no insurance, you'd find yourself in very deep water.

Simply put, only a fool would chance their luck, so don't even entertain the idea. If you're just about to purchase a vehicle, then you should ideally be thinking about what type of insurance you need.

The thing which has the most impact on the cost of car insurance is the make and model of car you buy. Obviously, it then makes sense that you should keep this in mind, particularly if you're hoping to find cheap insurance. Certain cars cost significantly more to insure than others. Some makes are more likely to be stolen than others, so of course insurance companies charge more to insure those makes.

According to figures released by the Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service in January of this year, a Ford Escort is more likely to be stolen than a BMW, even though most people would find the latter more desirable. With that said, it will still cost you more to insure a BMW than what it would to insure a Ford Escort, simply because the BMW would cost far more to replace if it did get stolen.

Even the colour of a car influences the cost of insurance. For example, a white car costs less to insure than a black one. One reason for this is because if the car got vandalised, black car paint costs more. If your car has a metallic finish, you'll also pay slightly more for your car insurance.

If you intend purchasing a slightly older model of car, you should also check to see whether or not it has an alarm and an immobiliser fitted because this is also something all insurance companies are going to ask you when you ask them for a quote. The more difficult it is for thieves to steal your car, the more chance you have of finding cheap car insurance quotes.

In fact, insurance companies will also want to know if you keep your car locked in a secure area when it's not being used. In other words, do you keep it in a garage at night, or do you simply leave it parked out on the road? If it's the latter, expect to pay more for cover.

Of course your age will also be taken into consideration, but unless you're under the age of 25, you don't really have anything to worry about. Unfortunately, if you've not yet turned 25, you're going to pay more, and while this may seem unfair, there's nothing you can do about it apart from giving consideration to looking at insurers who specialise in car insurance for young drivers.

The only other thing really which could prevent you from finding cheap car insurance for young drivers is if you've had a series of convictions. The bottom line is, if you're willing to do a little research, you'll be able to find cover that suits your budget until you reach your 25th birthday if you shop around for the best deals.
