subject: Do You Really Need Commercial Business Insurance? [print this page]

As a business owner you no doubt want to try and save money wherever possible, and as such, you may be tempted to try and get away without having adequate insurance in place. One thing to bear in mind however, it's illegal to operate a business in the United Kingdom without having the correct type of insurance cover in place.

Of course it's perfectly understandable for business owners to question the necessity of commercial business insurance, considering that it can account for a relatively large amount of money each year, and in the vast majority of cases it appears as though it's of no direct benefit to a business. In fact, many business owners end up feeling as though they are simply being forced to hand over a slice of their profits for no apparent reason.

Even though this may be the case, deciding to go without cover could very well prove to be the worst decision you'll ever have made. Even if you've been in business for the last twenty years and you've never needed to make a claim, you can never be absolutely certain that you won't need it in the future.

If something unforeseen happens, having the proper type of cover in place could quite literally save your business from total destruction. For example, a fire could break out and destroy most of your property, together with the vast majority of your business assets. Unless you're incredibly wealthy, your business would be ruined if you didn't have an insurance policy to fall back on. Not only would you need to get your premises repaired or even read built from scratch, but you'll also need to replace everything else which was destroyed in the fire. Depending on the type of business you operate, it could cost millions of pounds to get your business up and running again.

Apart from a fire breaking out, there are several other things which could potentially cause your business to collapse. Flooding for example has destroyed many businesses in the UK over the last few years, and while many of those business owners were adequately insured, there will also many of them who had failed to take the concept of business insurance seriously. Many of these people had no option but to find a regular job simply because they weren't financially capable of picking up the pieces.

Of course if you have people working for you or if your business frequently involves contact with members of the public, then business insurance becomes even more important. It isn't even worth trying to imagine what type of trouble you'll be in if a member of the public, or even if one of your employees ends up getting injured on your premises. As the owner of the business, you are the one who is responsible for all costs resulting from an accident on your premises.

If a customer is seriously injured on your premises you'll soon discover that the cost of business insurance is relatively cheap, especially when it's compared to the amount of compensation you could end up being forced to pay.
