Penang Butterfly Farm Winged Beauty Unleashed

A world of colour awaits visitors at the live museum that is the Penang Butterfly Farm. Housing an incredible variety of these fragile flying creatures, visitors will be exposed to a world of colour. This butterfly park opened in 1996 and has the distinction of being the one of the first its kind.

The butterfly farm was created with the purpose of being more than just an attraction as it strives to generate interest in the field of entomology, which is the study of insects. While many may perceive the farm as being a simple tourist attraction, this couldnt be farther from the truth. The farm actually breeds butterflies instead of taking them from the environment and also stresses on issues such as habitat destruction.

There are well over a 1000 butterflies stemming from a 120 different species. Visitors can also expect to see the renowned Rajah Brooke which is a black butterfly with fluorescent patches of green on its wings that create an unusual appearance.

Penang Butterfly Farm presents a unique type of experience as some of the butterflies roam freely in somewhat of a natural and uncontrolled setting. The main attraction that can be found at the farm is the large open enclosure that houses freely flying butterflies. This is a unique experience in that visitors are free to get as close as they wish to the butterflies as they fly from plant to plant.

Beyond butterflies, the farm also has various exhibits of reptiles and various other insect types which regularly draw large crowds. Once you have finished navigating through the variety of displays that are here the gift shop presents the chance to buy a perfect souvenir or gift.

Much like the rest of Malaysia, travellers will find a host of luxury hotels Penang to provide that extra level of comfort. Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa Penang goes beyond a hotel by offering the same comforts with the added activities of a Penang beach resort.
