In 1944 he gifted this collection to the city of Glasgow. When making this gift Sir William Burrell made a request that it should be housed away from the City Centre to avoid the collection being damaged by air pollution. After twenty years of looking for a suitable location Pollock Estate met all the required criteria. It was here the museum was constructed that was open to the public in 1983 .The Burrell Museum is located five kilometers, south from the city centre.

The Burrell Collection comprises of medieval art which include weapons and amour, stained glass and tapestries, artifacts from ancient China and Egypt. Islamic art, Oak Furniture and a nunmber of other artifacts collected from all over the world. Modern Sculptures and Impressionists works by Degas and Cezanne are also on display.
