subject: Gardening With Our Aging Parents - Suggestions and Benefits [print this page]

A large portion of my summer time is gardening. Intriguing side note: "Lawn therapy" has been shown to be efficient in the treatment of Alzheimer's. A British study shows that it relieves anxiety in those with dementia. All the far more cause!

In listening to my mother share tales about their community garden in her retirement center, I've arrive up with the following suggestions:

* Take into account producing a raised bed. You just develop a wood structure and fill it with soil. There are also raised bed kits.

* Look at a potted plant on your deck. The fragrant smell and obtaining outside could do so much to lift the spirits.

* Include your father or mother in picking what to plant. Even a single plant might be sufficient. And, when her plant starts to yield, she proudly shares the tomatoes with all her neighbors.

* The greatest times of day to yard for the elderly is early morning or evening to minimize the sun, heat and humidity.

* Look at adaptive gardening resources. Believe about your parent's particular requirements as you take into account tools with the appropriate grip, length, weight and durability.

* The entire cycle of arranging, planting, tending, harvesting is a fantastic action for the entire body, head and soul.

Conversations will probably lead to tales of past gardening, household periods, memories.

* The refreshing air and sunlight is healthy.

* Smell and touch of the soil, plants and their yield can be really healing.

* Being immersed in an action that they can shed themselves in can assist them place worries out of their thoughts.

I'd enjoy to hear from other people. For more information visit:
