Tourism In Poovar

Poovar is a small coastal village located in Trivandrum district in the state of Kerala. Poovar is renowned for its spectacular beach, which has become a hot tourist attraction. The island of Poovar is situated in close proximity to Vizhinjam, a natural harbour and has an estuary which links with the sea during high tides. The Neyyar River flows through the Neyyattinkara taluk into the Arabian Sea near Poovar.

Poovar is famous for its wonderful beach, luxuriant greenery, coconut groves, banana plantations and beautiful backwaters. Besides, there is a large network of lakes, canals, deltas, lagoons, estuaries and rivers that criss-cross its vast terrain. Fishing is an important occupation of the local natives.

Poovar Island is regarded as one of the most spendid natural delights in peninsular India. According to a legend, the erstwhile king of Travancore, Marthanda Varma, was so much fascinated by the picturesque beauty of the place, that he named it poo-aar, meaning a stream of flowers. Historically, Poovar was a well-known trading center of timber, sandalwood, ivory and spices. It is assumed that the huge trading ships of King Solomon landed in a port called 'Ophir', which later came to be known as Poovar. Poovar also holds the reputation for being one of the ancient Muslim settlements along the western coast of India. The Central Mosque in Poovar is believed to have been built by Malik ibn Dinar and his missionary team, almost 1,400 years ago.

The fabulous Poovar coast provides a lot of facilities to the tourists. Tourists can go for boating, swimming, water sports, backwater trips and cruises and can taste the most delicious seafood from small seaside stalls.
