Leon, Spain - the most preferred place among tourists

The province of Leon is one of the most popular destinations amongst those who visit Spain for holidaying. The city is blessed with moderate temperature and most beautiful buildings. There are many parks, museums, palaces, Basilica, tall mountains and vast plains, rich vegetation and above all picturesque nature which is most ideal for the tourist to enjoy his holiday. Now let us have a bird's eye view of this moderately populated province- Leon.

Church Basilica of San Isidoro:

According to available historical records, the place where the church is built was actually a Roman temple dedicated to God Mercury. In the 10th century a church was built on it. However, later it was destroyed and a century later the church in its present form was built in the traditional Romanesque design. In later period many additions were made to the Church in the traditional Gothic architectural design. Interestingly the arches depict Islamic traditional art. The interior of the Church is fully decorated with stunningly beautiful works of art and sculpture including some outstanding paintings. The museum annexed to the Church contains enormous works of art belonging to the medieval period. There are some manuscripts of the bible in mozarabic format believed to belong to the 7th century. Another work of the 7th Century is the Visigothic law code. The church receives highest number of tourists throughout the year.

This marvelous architectural work is considered as a jewel of Leon. A part of the building has been converted into a most luxurious hotel. The other part is a church which is fully decorated with great works of sculpture. This building is considered to be the best example of Renaissance architecture. The faade of the building exhibits most marvelous silver works. No tourist visiting Leon would miss this architectural marvel.

Palacio de los Guzmanes:

This palace called Palacio de los Guzmanes was built by the renowned architect Rodrigo. This is another outstanding example of renaissance architecture; this building now houses Leon's provincial government. Located in the center of the city, the building is surrounded by a beautiful park.

Medieval wall:

The wall built around the city of Leon during the medieval period is partly preserved. Romans also built a wall around the city to protect the city from enemies. Some watch towers have been constructed at appropriate places which were used to observe the movement of enemies. Part of this building is also preserved.
