subject: State Grants [print this page]

Women are eligible for a variety of state grants just for being female. And if you are a minority woman these grants are even more plentiful. In fact state grants can help these women tremendously in paying for business related costs, or even the start up costs of their own business. Two of the best examples include a Grant for Minority Women or a Foundation Grant. These types of state grants are available for student business training, minority entrepreneurs, the unemployed, community based business opportunities, business expansion, investment, and researchers.

Most of the state grants for minorities are actually government contracts established for minorities or disadvantaged businesses. If a person does find state grants for minorities in their area, they need to be prepared for a lengthy application process before it is awarded.

First things first, you need to know how to honestly and accurately fill out your application form to ensure you get the money you need. Do not be vague in your application, as leaving questions in the mind of the grant committee is a sure way to have your application denied. Instead, reveal as much as you can. Give the committee a chance to get to know you and your ambitions, and this will greatly increase your chances.

There are three basic steps you must remember when they are applying for state grants. Define what resources, personnel and materials that will be needed to accomplish the goals that you have set up for yourself.

Determine the funding that will be needed to reach the goal; more specifically how much money will be needed for materials, training of employees, rent, advertising, etc. You have to describe exactly what you are looking for. Ensure that your language is clear, simple and to the point and that you have detailed all of your goals. Having followed these steps, you will make yourself a more likely candidate to receive the grant funds you need.
