subject: University Grants [print this page]

University grants are money awards for students attending specific post-secondary institutions. Each university is responsible for establishing its own unique criteria for student eligibility for their free financial aid. Here well look into the most common forms of these grants available so you can understand where some of your options lie.

The Federal Pell Grant is the most well known of the university grants. It is a need based grant based on family income, and is the largest grant program in the country. There is no minimum grade point average or other criteria that a student needs to meet in order to be eligible for this grant. The only requirement is that you must attend an eligible school and be in financial need. Your eligibility is determined by your FAFSA application which asses your financial situation and overall need for the money. If you are chosen for the grant, the money will be sent directly to your school and applied toward the balance you owe for your tuition.

The second most common university grant supplied by the federal government is the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. This is also a need based grant that is available to full time and part time students. But unlike the Pell Grant, eligibility for this grant award is determined by the university who reviews your Student Aid Report. The Student Aid Report is a universitys personalized version of the FAFSA. Once again, if you receive the award, the money will be credited directly to your account. In order to qualify for this you must demonstrate an exceptional need for financing. Just because you have received a Federal Pell Grant, that does not mean you will receive the FSEOG. But you should definitely try.

The third most common university grant is the Academic Competitiveness Grant. You must be a full time student and also eligible for the Federal Pell Grant in order to qualify for this one. You must also be a United States citizen and be a recent high school graduate.

And the amount of money you will receive from these grants all depends on your financial need in order to finish your studies and complete your post-secondary education. There may be a wider variety of university grants offered by the university you have chosen to attend. Get started on your research for university grants today.
