Ensuring Summer Safety With Deck Railings

Your deck is, of course, a great stage for all that summer fun but the stage has to be safe. Well-constructed and properly sized deck railing can prevent a slight stumble from becoming a 15 foot fall while adding aesthetic appeal at the same time.

Using the Homes Walls If you can have your deck building contractor utilize the exterior wall of your home as an extra anchor for deck railings it will increase their overall stability a great deal. You should make the most of those walls in your deck design too. Although you may have one or two exterior lights installed already consider having new, updated lighting installed onto those exterior walls. This will not only make your deck a safer venue for a party after dusk but give you a chance to express your inner lighting designer as well.

Deck Railings and the Law Since building codes vary from place to place around the country, make sure that you and your deck building contractor know what the local codes say about constructing deck railings and that your new structure complies with those rules. Many codes regulate how high a decks railings should be and how far apart they should be spaced but some even regulate what they can be made of.

Deck Railing Materials Wood is the most commonly used deck railing material but because you will be using less of it than will be needed to construct the deck itself why not consider opting for a more exotic wood species for your railings, to add a little extra design flair and drama?
