Tighten up. The biggest reason players end up out of a tournament early is because they are playing too loose. Most do this with the intention of getting ahead early and getting a lead, however this doesn't always work.

Don't make any stupid mistakes. This means don't go all-in pre-flop, don't go all-in when you don't absolutely know you have the best card.

It also means don't bet post-flop when you have nothing, don't do stupid bluffs that get you nowhere, don't take on a player with a massive stack then yours.

Heck this is 6 tips in one

I often find that it is easier to get further in a tournament when you bet aggressively. Now, to tell you the truth, I've found it easier all round to play Holdem aggressively. In fact, I never had much success with passive play, checking, or check raises, and most of what I have learnt has pretty much said aggressive play is the way to go.

Aggressive play works and it's proven to work. There are so many reasons it is not funny. The trick I have found is to consistently be aggressive. Don't be aggressive for a few hands, then check and call a lot, then switch back. You need to consistently be aggressive.

Now, I'm sure you are aware that there getting far in a tournament won't necessarily win you the tournament. And you'll probably hear me and many people say that you want to be winning, not just getting far. Well, the truth it, being able to get into the late stages of a tournament is a crucial step to winning first place. If you are losing quickly that is what you need to work on.

You are probably realizing that moving through a tournament in chunks, like early, mid and late stage game play is important, and you are right. The thing is, if you don't know how to play each stage properly you won be able to win. So I urge you to go out and find out how and learn how to do this so that one day you too can win money playing in Holdem tournaments.
