Tips For Staying Safe On An Inflatable Boat

Boating is a relaxing a fun pastime but can be dangerous at the same time if proper care is not taken. Even though inflatable boats are durable and hard to tip over, it is still important to be safe when on the water. Here are some useful tips to help keep everybody on board safe.

Before take off. Before going boating anywhere, it is important to know what the area is like and what the laws are pertaining to boating. Different areas have different regulations and restrictions. Looking into these can help prevent any trouble from arising with the water patrol. Knowing how to operate the inflatable boat before taking off is equally important. Without a strong knowledge of all the ins and outs pertaining to the boat, an accident is more likely to happen. It is also important to have all necessary equipment onboard before taking off. Lifejackets, first aid kits, maps, and all paperwork should be secured in the boat before leaving. Remember, just because the boat is inflatable, it doesn't mean that it is exempt from standard safety precautions.

While on the Water. There are also some safety rules that deal specifically with the operation of the boat. It is important to make sure that the maximum number of passengers is not exceeded. Attempting to haul someone on the front and/or back of a one person kayak, for example, is not a particularly good idea. While larger inflatable boats are still very buoyant, they too have a limited capacity. Also, drinking is never a safe thing to do on a boat. Accidents are more likely to happen if the driver or passengers are intoxicated. While some inflatable boats and inflatable rafts are powered by hand with oars or paddles, some larger inflatable boats are able to have outboard motors. Many of these are equipped with a safety kill switch lanyards in order to automatically shut off the engine if the driver falls overboard. It is also important to remember that even though inflatable boats are very buoyant and do not tip easily, it is still possible. When in an inflatable boat, the safest situation is to remain seated or at least keep moving around to a minimum.

Regardless of the fact that inflatable boats are quite safe and not prone to tipping, accidents can still occur. That is why it is important to be careful when using inflatable boats.
