subject: Extra Fees When Shipping From The Us To Canada [print this page]

When you do business in a border state, if often becomes very convenient to do business internationally. For example, when you live in Wisconsin, Canada, and Canadian cities, are often as close to do business with as many major American centers. As such, you might look into using your messenger WI company to make deliveries to Canada as well as the United States.

Widening your client base is always a good way to help increase your overall profits. However, there are some extra things that you may have to worry about when shipping internationally. When you're shipping from the US to Canada, there are certain fees and taxes that are going to apply to your shipment that don't matter when you're only shipping domestically.

When you're shipping across the border to the north, there are typically going to be three types of charges that you're going to have to worry about. Taxes, brokerage fees, and special duties or fees are mostly what you're going to have to worry about.

Anything that is shipped to Canada is going to have to deal with the GST, the Canadian Goods and Services Tax which applies to almost anything that is brought into the country. This tax is 5%, and in addition, there is an added tax in several provinces. This means that if you're shipping to some provinces, you'll have to pay a PST, and in others you won't. Ontario is a province with a PST, Alberta is one without.

Anytime you ship internationally, the one fee that you're always going to have to pay is your customs broker. However, there is a great tip for helping to save money on brokerage costs. Those fees are assessed on a per shipment basis. That means that if you send one big shipment instead of five little ones, you'll only have to pay the fee once, saving you a lot of money in the long run.

Finally, there are certain goods which are going to be subject to duties, other taxes, and fees based on the category that they fall into. There are import fees that apply to certain goods as well. Generally, the bigger your shipment is, the more complicated these matters can become, especially when international trade agreements apply to what you are shipping. That is why you should always consult with a broker or shipping expert when sending large cargo across the border.
