subject: How Much Insurance Do You Need For Your Commercial Van? [print this page]

Shopping for commercial van insurance may be bewildering, with all these companies offering not only varying levels of insurance, but also extras, which could be handy or just unnecessary. There are a few things to bear in mind when planning to cover your commercial van and to help you sort through the companies.

Nothing is free is the prime rule. Now, a van insurance policy may offer a host of extras but remember they too are a business, and offering windscreen cover or loss of license benefits - which cover you in case you lose your license - are extras, and they cost money. Even if an extra is not directly attached to your policy, they will charge for it in some way. Therefore, the first rule of finding cheap van insurance is to get only what you need. Extras have to be paid for and if you do not wish to use it then you should not be paying it.

Commercial vans which are a business' direct livelihood should be protected as much as is possible, in some cases a motor vehicle 'is' the business and complete cover makes sense, as that van must be replaced or there is no business. Larger companies or enterprises may have a host of commercial vans, which all need the best cover possible. Consider this a business expense, not an extra if your commercial van is what makes your business run.

Getting the policy that covers what you need and still getting the best van insurance rates requires some comparison shopping. It is a lot like running down to the corner market because it is close, though you can do that, it will cost you much more in all likelihood.

Fortunately, for business owners who need reasonable commercial van insurance rates, the internet is here to save us, literally. Rather than getting on the telephone and dialling up a host of brokers or insurers, you hop online and start to compare rates. No sales pressure (brokers do have to make a living) and no comparing two completely different types of commercial van insurance online.

You know what you are buying (you should be watching out for those extras) you know just what you will be paying and you can compare multiple insurer's rates. Even if your commercial insurance policy requires some specialised extras, such as for courier's where the goods in transit must also be covered, you can find it and usually from several reputable insurers.

Know what is included in these cheap van insurance rates, and understand what is excluded. For example, if your commercial van never leaves the country you need not worry about restrictions on cover throughout Europe (most policies will cover anyway). If you have your own vehicle repair business and even transport for your van in the case of a breakdown or accident, then on the road assistance may be of little use to you in an insurance policy. If it is offered and the policy is competitive then sure take it if you like, but if it is an extra service which adds to the cost of your cheap van insurance and you don't need it, avoid it. After all, you are in business to make money, so buy only what you need.
