What To Do If Your Auto's Battery Runs Dead

It is very important for any motorist to bring with him emergency tools in his automobile just like jump cables. This will definitely come in handy if you end up suddenly stuck in the middle of the highway or parking lot having a dead battery. This typically happens when you have forgotten to turn off the lights of your vehicle, leading your battery to drain. If you end up in this situation all you will need is a jump cable and a kind-hearted Samaritan to help you.

It goes to say that once you have jump cables, the next thing to do is to watch out for a kind hearted vehicle driver who would stop so you could plug the jump cables into his auto's working battery. To make it easier for you and the other car owner, it would be recommended if your jump cable is somewhere around 10 feet in length. Having the extra bandwidth will make it easier to attach the cables to both vehicles. You also must listen up to minor details before you unveil full force into revving up your engine. First, prior to when you do anything else, ensure that the batteries are not frozen. It is very risky to quick start your automobile if the batteries are frozen simply because it could explode.

Second, give the battery terminals a quick check. If there are blue or green molds surrounding it, you must clear it first by using a wire brush. For the meantime, just do away with the molds and come up with a mental note to replace your batteries ASAP. Seeing molds in your vehicle's batteries is much like keeping stale bread in your refrigerator-it must be thrown and replaced. You should also determine if there are cracks throughout the battery casing. If you find any signs of tear, there is no need to be a mechanic simply because the batteries are damaged; might as well call up any of the Portland auto repair shops to have a an alternative one delivered.

You will have better chances of jump starting your car's battery if not one of the above-mentioned scenarios are found. At this point, do not forget- the batteries have positive and negative terminals. Familiarize its location because jump cables are linked to specific charges. This means the positive charge should be connected to another positive charge and the negative charge should be paired with the metal portion of the automobile. You should notice a plus ( ) sign to indicate that the terminal has a positive charge. Consequently, the uncovered section of the battery will indicate the negative terminal that is corded by one black cable.

The engine ignitions of the two automobiles have to be turned off before the jump cables are attached to the batteries. Then, you must connect the jump cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery. The other end of that cable has to be clipped to the positive terminal of the 'active' battery. And once this has been done, take the second cable line and clip to the negative terminal of the latter. The opposite end of that cable must be then attached to the metal ground or engine block of the dead battery. Bear in mind we are not pertaining to the negative terminal of that battery. The 'ground' needs to be any metal surface. Bear in mind not to smoke while doing this.

The jump starting will need to start up by turning on the engine of the 'charged' car. Give it around five minutes then start out the automobile with the dead batteries. If this does not do the trick, wait for a few seconds just before restarting the engine. If the vehicle still does not start up, then it probably never will and you may have to contact the tow company and purchase new batteries. If it starts, it follows that you are one lucky guy. Get rid of the jump cables in reverse order (while the ignitions of both cars are switched on). This means that you get rid of the clamp from the metal ground or engine block, then the negative clamp from the helping vehicle. You then go to removing the positive clamp from the helping car and lastly, the positive clamp from your vehicle.

Make sure that you appreciate the individual who assisted you in jump starting your automobile. Social graces would dictate that you invite the person for coffee to return the favor. He will most likely decline the offer yet it would definitely be valued.
