What Matters most when Shipping to Different Countries?

If you're about to start exporting goods to one or more countries you haven't shipped to in the past, there are several things to consider.

1. Different countries have different regulations.

One set of regulations may apply when you ship your goods from the US to Europe. Russia export may involve different regulations, and so may any of the other countries located throughout the world.

You'll probably want to learn about all the various regulations involved with each country you plan to ship to in time. You'll also want to have full knowledge about the regulations of your destinations' neighboring countries if your goods will need to travel through them, as well.

Until you gain all of that knowledge, you'll need to find a logistics firm that's experienced in shipping goods to your destination countries.

2. Tariffs and legal or contractual expenses may vary by country.

Typically, tariffs and legal or contractual fees are considered add-on expenses by logistics firms, as they have no control over these costs. Yet you must be fully aware of all the various taxes, tariffs or fees you'll be required to pay to ship to any given country.

Unless you like costly surprises and delays, it's best to ship with a company that is aware of and discloses all tariff and other fees involved with shipping cargo to your destination country of choice.

3. Safety and security of your cargo.

You may be aware that shipping goods to certain countries involves a higher level of risk, but there's more to safety and security than meets the eye. You may feel very secure about shipping to Europe, while Russia export may seem to involve slightly higher risks, as an example.

In reality, only a highly experienced logistics firm that's shipped many, many times to your destination country can provide an accurate assessment of risk.

4. Timely shipping and delivery.

Shipping to international countries can involve very costly delays if the process isn't carefully managed. If you don't choose the right logistics firm, your cargo may sit around for days or even longer waiting to ship out. Upon arrival, it may sit again if efficient pick-up and delivery aren't arranged in advance.

When you choose a logistics firm, insist on reasonable guarantees about transport and delivery times. Insist on easy access to shipment tracking information 24 hours a day, as well.
